Abstract
The objective of this article is to argue the insertion and the performance of the Railroad Santa Catarina in theValley of the Itajaí, since the conception of the project, end of century XIX until the complete deactivation, in 1971.The following topics will be boarded in the text: the legal concessions and the initial projects; the beginning of the operations of the railroad; the expansion of the line for the west and the coast; the competition that the EFSC suffered with the highway; and the taken initiatives to disactivate it. Finally, one brief reflection on deficits of the railroad and the economic performance of the region will be made.
