Abstract

The Spanish society experimented deep economic and social changes in the second half of the XX" Century. Whereas after the Second World War, its per capita income was less than a half of that of other countries of Western Europe, in the beginning of the XXI century it reached over 80% of the Europe of EURO. The most important aspect of these structural changes was the transformation of the economic structure, from a predominantly agrarian to industrial economy and, finally, to an economy dominated by the tertiary sector. What is more, these changes caused deep consequences in regional and territorial imbalances due to both massive interregional migration and the concentration and polarization processes associated with the industrialization. In this context, this paper intends to present and analyse the evolution of regional planning and policies in Spain, since the beginning of Franco's period until nowadays.
