Abstract
The main object of this article is the portrayal and analysis of Brazilian “finance”, understood here as monetary, credit, and exchange rate issues, in two books - Le Brésil and Le Brésil en 1889 - published in France in 1889 during the Brazilian monarchy´s participation in the Universal Exhibition in Paris. The article seeks to place in context the positions of these two works that promoted the country to attract funds as well as immigrants to Brazil. The main aspect of this article is to demonstrate how the authors of these books tried to convince foreign investors of the attractive returns that awaited them in Brazil as the consequence of the sound financial policies placed in effect by the monarchy.
