Abstract

The present article examines the importance of the sugar planters' privileges regarding credit. To this end, we conducted an examination of the Law of August 30, 1833, along with previous legal provisions including the decrees of July 6, 1807, and January 21, 1809. The analysis of the legislation is contextualized within the social conflicts and tensions of the agents involved, as well as the economic and political transformations that took place in Brazil during the first half of the 19th century. Ultimately, by linking credit practices to political culture and changes in property rights, the article seeks to highlight the significant modifications in credit agreements established between sugar planters and merchants.
