War and finances in the Interior: A balance-sheet of revenues and expenditures in Salta, Tucumán and Mendoza during the revolution (1810-1820)

Abstract

This paper aims at an analysis of the finances of Salta, Tucumán and Mendoza, the three major provinces of Rio de la Plata where the two greatest armies operated during the revolutionary decade: the Ejército de los Andes and the Ejército Auxiliar del Perú. We study the most recent works to make a balance of the state of the art for each province, considering their incomes and expenses, focusing mainly on the military expenditures. We conclude that despite the remarkable recent historiographical advances, some regions remain better studied than others, where there are some discrepancies between the historical data analyzed and the particular fiscal and military situations during the revolution.
