O visconde imigrantista e a sua escravaria, Campinas, 1887

Abstract

This article looks at the action of Joaquim Bonifácio do Amaral, Visconde de Indaiatuba, a promoter of immigration of European laborers into Brazilian coffee farming, in order to foster the transition from slave labor to free labor. The article is not only restricted to examining the role of the viscount in the formation of the free labor market. It also investigates the composition of the viscount to his legatees, or the nature of his wealth, based on analyses of his will that of and members of his family, as well as on slavery legislation, newspapers etc.
