Centralização política e concentração de riqueza

Resumo

This article analyzes the distribution of revenues and expenses, by provinces and regions, of the Brazilian imperial government during the period 1830 to 1889 utilizing information provided by the Balanço da Receita e Despesas do Império (Statement of Revenue and Expenses of the Empire). The study discusses both the sources as well as the uses of public funds. The research concludes that the financial structure of the Empire functioned efficiently in appropriating revenues principally from the provinces of Pernambuco, Bahia, Maranhão, Pará, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro. On the other hand, the major beneficiaries of fiscal distribution were the imperial capital and the province of Rio Grande do Sul.
